About
The Online Publication Server of the Freiburg University of Education serves as the University’s platform for electronic publications of scholarly works. It is offered as a service of the Library in cooperation with the Library Service Center Baden-Württemberg (BSZ). The Freiburg University of Education is thus following the recommendations of the Science Council and the University Rectors‘ Conference to set up an electronic scientific publication system.

Who may publish in OPUS-PHFR?
OPUS-PHFR is available as a publication platform to all members of the Freiburg University of Education.
Which documents can be publishes in OPUS-PHFR?
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s theses of students of the Freiburg University of Education.
  • Scholarly works by teachers at the Freiburg University of Education (including research papers, essays, reports, conference contributions, etc.)
  • Scholarly works by other members of the University of Education, examination papers (Bachelor’s and Master’s theses) with a written recommendation for publication by a lecturer at the university.

How long are documents available online?
There is no time limit for the availability of the electronic files. They are stored additionally for a long time on the archive server oft he German National Library.
Is it possible to change or delete documents in OPUS-PHFR?
Documents can’t be changed or delete, which guarantees their authenticity just like with printed publications. Subsequent changes or corrections to the text are therefore not possible. If the authors wish to make a correction, the changed documents must be entirely re-published, which corresponds to a new edition for printed publications.
Are documents in OPUS-PHFR quotable?
Publications in OPUS-PHFR are basically equivalent to conventional publications and thus citable. Uniform Resource Names (URN) are generated and registered with the German National Library for the permanent and stable addressing of an electronic resource in OPUS-PHFR.

How do I publish my work here?
Please click on the publication link on the start page.
First you are requested to choose a document type. Right beneath that you can upload your document files. Having done so you may click on "send". What follows now is the actual form. You have to fill in data about your publication here (so called metadata), which is used to describe your work in catalouges and other bibliographic directories. Describe the document you want to upload using the categories and fields on the publication form. Depending on the document type, some of these fields are mandatory and therefore have to be filled in. Please describe your document as clear as possible. Mandatory fields are for example:
  • the document type (must be choosen from a list)
  • the title of your publication and the language of the title
  • the abstract of the document
  • the language of the document (must be choosen from a list)
  • the licence, under which you want to publish your document (must be choosen from a list)
If you are unsure what to fill in certain form fields, you can point the cursor on a field and an explaining help text will be shown.
After you have finished the form, all data will be displayed once again for a check-up and you then have three possibilities: you can correct them if necessary, add your document to a collection or simply safe it directly.
What's metadata?
Metadata can be defined as
  • data describing one or more ressources
  • or as
  • data associated with an object and describing it
Basically metadata is describing documents, objects or services and contains information about their content, structure or form. More abstractly metadata is a description of data or "data about data". Bibliographic data sets and catalog entries in library catalogs can be seen as a kind of metadata.

This repository is using metadata in the Dublin Core Metedata Element Set (short Dublin Core (DC)) which has fifteen basic elements. Dublin Core is the result of international efforts to reach a collective consensus in describing electronic objects (in the broadest sense). The Library of Congress (LoC), the Online Cataloging Library Center (OCLC) and several national libraries are dealing with Dublin Core in many projects and are close to introduce the system respectively.

What about copyright?
The same legal provisions apply to electronically published materials and traditional publications. Third-party content may only be used with the consent of the respective author or publisher or in the context of a citation. By marking the rights of use in the publication form, you confirm to the Library that you do not violate any rights of third parties. In addition to copyrights, this may also include personal rights, data protection rights, trademark and patent rights.
In most cases this is no problem. Please ensure in any case, if your publisher allows a parallel publication! To do that you can use the SHERPA/ROMEO list.
Authors can choose which terms of use must be regarded for their publication. These terms are defined in a license. This repository supports different licenses, from which you can choose one (i.e. Creative Commons Licenses/).
About Creative Commons Licenses
You can make it much easier for your document to be disseminated in specialist circles, for example by providing it with a Creative Commons license ("Some rights reserved"). This allows you to expressly permit third parties to copy and distribute your work, provided that you are always named as the author, that there is no commercial use and that your work remains unchanged.
