  • In Political Science the epistemological analysis of normative justification has been a desideratum of research for a long time. Since traditional strategies of normative argumentation such as Ontologism, Kantianism or Historical Materialism have become untenable, a substantial theoretical foundation for intersubjective normative reasoning is missing. Consequently, the discourse in current Political Science is constrained to the empirical and analytical perspective. Normative issues such as social justice or political legitimation get more and more marginalised within the discipline. The study reconstructs the development of contemporary Political Science towards a behaviouristic social science in the tradition of David Hume and Max Weber. Subsequently, new concepts of normative Political Science within the field of normative Policy Analysis (Frank Fischer) and Political Philosophy (Habermas, Rawls) are presented and critically discussed. Turning to interdisciplinary basic research, the study gives attention to the current theoretical and methodological discussion in the field of Metaethics and Applied Ethics. Based on this critical analysis a distinct cognitivist metaethical position is being developed. The analysis ends with the presentation of a basic concept of normative Political Science in combination with application examples in the subdomains normative Democratic Theory and normative International Politics.
