  • Scientists in Germany of various natural and social disciplines, reason since the 1950ties up to presence for including an interdisciplinary approach into research and academic teaching. Justifications for interdisciplinary approaches in research emphasise epistemic and methodological limitations of disciplinary approaches. Simultaneously interdisciplniarity is valued as a corrective for processes of increasing differentiations between and within disciplines. Additionally stakeholders, e.g. supra-national political organisations, non-profit organisations as well as town councils, demand from Science and (social) scientists to solve complex ecological and social problems by applying an interdisciplinary approach. However, looking at the literature, it becomes obvious that concepts of ‘interdisciplinary research’ vary between authors. Additionally complicating for a clarifying process of terminology is the fact, that isochronal various terms for cooperations between disciplines have been invented. So, interdisciplinarity has been used as a superior concept, encompassing various modes of cooperations between disciplines. Interdisciplinarity has also been specified with supplementing adjectives by which different modes of cooperations should become distinct. Finally interdisciplinary has also been conceptualised as a specific mode of cooperation distinguishable from other forms as e.g. multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary cooperation. In academic teaching, as an integrated ‘general studies‘ program, interdisciplinarity is seen to comprehend the potential to maintain, despite all specialisation processes in study courses, “Allgemeinbildung” for all students. Also interdisciplinary teaching is seen to enhance student’s openness for different methodological approaches, for nomological as well as hermeneutical method. Finally higher education has the responsibility to realise aims defined by the UNESCO and put into practise “Education for Sustainable Development”, which requires necessarily an interdisciplinary approach.
