N2 - The study deals with the significance and attractiveness of productive methods in music instruction in the school. On the basis of a survey of 1222 secondary-level pupils, thirty-five different methods and contents of music instruction were discerned in terms of their genderspecific cognition and their varying representation in the instruction by female and male teachers. Additionally analyzed was the acceptance of these thirty-five instructional components by pupils who are also active musically in their free time and by those who do not make music privately. In view of the special interest shown in aesthetic education in the current musicpedagogical discourse, particular attention was paid to the productive area, which includes genuine musical activities such as composing and improvising as well as aesthetic-transformative activities. Central results of the study are that productive methods still play a marginal role in actual music instruction in the school, and that the differences between the methodic preferences of girls and boys persist in adulthood, so that instruction by female and male teachers is characterized by a different repertoire of methods. Furthermore the study shows that the general attitude toward the subject of music is positively influenced by this productive instruction only in the case of pupils who are also musically active in their free time.
